Shu Q. Liu Professor of Biomedical Engineering

Research Interests

Dr. Shu Q. Liu is interested in protective engineering, the engineering aspect of protective medicine. In particular, Dr. Liu intends to understand the naturally evolved systems protective mechanisms in ischemic disorders: ischemia in an organ can activate protective mechanisms involving selected remote organs that discharge cells and/or endocrine factors to protect the ischemic organ from injury. The systems protective mechanisms, together with regionally activated protective processes, augment the survival capability of the injured organ, thereby reducing organ failure and mortality. The naturally evolved systems protective mechanisms are used to develop engineering strategies for treatment of ischemia- and injury-induced disorders in experimental models.
